WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature in its Android v2.24.15.5 version that will let users translate messages into different languages directly within the app. This feature aims to use Google’s Live Translate functionality in WhatsApp chats, making it easier for users to translate foreign texts without leaving the app.
According to WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, reports from updating to this beta version indicate users will get a pop-up alert verifying they can now access transcripts for incoming voice messages. Users of this capability must obtain a language pack or voice message transcription. The capability covers English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Hindi. Since voice communications are encrypted, the audio is examined and transcribed on the user’s phone, guaranteeing anonymity.
Still under development, the live transcription choice is not accessible to beta testers currently. Users of the most recent WhatsApp for Android beta version via the Google Play Beta program could thus not access it. It is unknown whether this new capability will be available in the WhatsApp for Android beta app.
Furthermore, it is reportedly under development on a live transcription capability for voice messages: WhatsApp for Android. This function allows users to transcribe the voice messages they transmit or receive. A new banner showing the opportunity to obtain a transcription under a voice message could signal this.
