According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior on Friday, the federal government has not decided to suspend internet services during the month of Muharram. Due to security concerns, The provincial governments requested a one-week suspension of six social media applications during Muharram, which is expected to start on July 8.

In a statement, the interior ministry spokesperson said no decision has been made on the provincial governments’ requests and advised people not to believe rumors. The statement also clarified that the Prime Minister’s Office has not issued any directive to suspend the internet during the holy month. The ministry added that the provincial government’s application has yet to be accepted or rejected.

The Punjab administration justified the action by pointing to disseminating false information and hate speech. Per a letter from the Punjab Home Department, the Standing Committee of the Cabinet on Law and Order met to discuss Muharram security and administrative plans. During this conference, it was decided to halt the use of social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter from Muharram 6 to 11. This was done to stop hate speech and false information from spreading and to stop sectarian violence.
